OVERNIGHT SUCCESS

by Stan C. Countz

“That guy is truly gifted and blessed.”
I heard someone say under their breath
But a few know the truth of how obsessed
He’s been or what plates he’s had to spin

Or what he’s had to do to try to ace the test
Or just how lonely and depressed he’s been
Or what he’s had to do to handle the stress
Ain’t no such thing as an “overnight success”

It ain’t easy to be the best
Or to strive for excellence
Especially when you’re swimming
In a sea of mediocrity
Ain’t no such thing
as an “overnight success”

Our heart’s desire is to light the fire and fan the flame
It’s hard to take aim when the target has changed
Who’s to blame for setting the bar higher and higher?
And who changed the rules of the game?

Our whole life we’ve strived to seek the truth
We’ve been running a race we can never win
Now we’ve found that the cheese has moved
We gotta draw a line and start all over again

Now we wonder how we can keep up the pace
Can we hope to compete in a global rat race?
It’s hard to face, so all we do is run in place
We’ve become a generation lost in space

It ain’t easy to be the best
Or to strive for excellence
Especially when you’re swimming
In a sea of mediocrity
Ain’t no such thing
as an “overnight success”
It ain’t easy to be the best
It ain’t easy to pass the test
Ain’t no such thing
As an “overnight success”
Ain’t no such thing
As an “overnight success”
